“Children have abounding vitality, because they are in spirit fierce and free, therefore they want things repeated and unchanged. They always say, ‘Do it again’; and the grown-up person does it again until he is nearly dead. For grown-up people are not strong enough to exult in monotony.”

-GK Chesterton

As a parent and a guy who historically has had more energy and cardiorespiratory capacity than the other adults at children’s parties, I deeply resonate with these words. Giving the kids horsey rides was fun the first 50 times, but what was left of the intervertebral space between L5 and S1 no longer finds this activity amusing. My Dad Joke about two sheep walking into a baaaaaa wasn’t really that funny the first time, but somehow Devin and Kyle, still in stitches, have insisted I re-tell it to every single person at the trampoline park. And Hailey literally threw up after being spun around and, undeterred, is back for more! At this point, the “nearly dead” part of the quote is a looming reality.

But thankfully, the eternal Creator and Sustainer of the Universe is not subject to such limitations. Chesterton continues:

“But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, ‘Do it again’ to the sun; and every evening, ‘Do it again’ to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never got tired of making them. It may be that He has the eternal appetite of infancy; for we have sinned and grown old, and our Father is younger than we. “

Praise God that His mercies are new every morning and He has endless patience with His impish children🙂
