Status was something he never did need

Yet he rose to the challenge when called to lead

But the current trial set before him now

Is learning to be just a Face in the Crowd

He could handle a target etched on his back

Disarm verbal missiles with grace, love, and tact

But befuddled, perplexed, he could not figure out

How to be just a Face in the Crowd

Always aware of wolves who’d attack

Accustomed to leading in front of the pack

But donning this sheepskin feels foreign somehow

The wardrobe of just one more Face in the Crowd

Don’t misunderstand, he smelled like his sheep

Embracing the honor to wash his flock’s feet

The room is still full, but he’s all alone now

For such is the plight of a Face in the Crowd

Are leaders developed? Are some leaders born?

Will a leader not leading always be forlorn?

Can he be invisible? I have my doubts

That he can remain just a Face in the Crowd
