A woman tearfully approached her husband.
“I just feel Iike we’re drifting apart,” she stammered.
“That’s silly,” the man stated matter-of-factly. “We’re married and we’re literally 6 feet away from each other as we speak.”
She rolled her eyes. “I tried to talk to you about this last week but you were busy working on a project.”
“Well that was inconsiderate of you…I was preoccupied. And we couldn’t have this life without my job.”
“But I don’t even feel like there’s any love here!”
“That’s ridiculous, honey. I said, ‘I love you’ at least twice yesterday and I got you a generic card and flowers for our anniversary.”
Sobbing uncontrollably, she whispered, “How did this happen?”
Handing her a box of Kleenex, he said, “You’re right, there’s definitely some things you can work on. Why don’t you write down a list of strategies you could use to be more thankful about our wonderful life? There’s really nothing wrong; it’s just a matter of perspective.”
2 weeks later, she filed for divorce. He sighed. “They’re all the same,” he thought; the previous 5 had behaved in a similarly dramatic manner. And yet, he couldn’t help but wonder why she hadn’t mentioned anything. Communication and transparency are critically foundational in any relationship.
He shrugged. At least he had done his part.
