Autumn is finally here, which means it’s PUFFY COAT SEASON!
But since at Lifelovelipids.com we celebrate Science ALL YEAR LONG, it’s also BUFFY COAT SEASON!
You may have come across a Buffy Coat or two when reading the Methods sections of various scholarly articles, but it’s not actually a Fashionable Fleece…it’s actually part of a Blood Sample after centrifugation!
- In a post-centrifugation blood sample, about 55% of the sample is PLASMA
- This contains proteins, LIPOPROTEINS, electrolytes, nutrients, and hormones
- About 45% of the sample is RED BLOOD CELLS
- This contains…red blood cells!
- And then, there is a layer between the plasma and red blood cells that accounts for <1% of the total blood volume…that’s the BUFFY COAT! And it primarily contains platelets and white blood cells. This “jacket” is particularly important for DNA isolation and can be very helpful in other specific situations as well.
So whether you’re wearing a Lab Coat or a Puffy Coat, hopefully you can also add the Buffy Coat to your wardrobe…I hear it’s particularly trendy among the Infectious Disease crowd😊
