
So I’m one of the authors of INCREASED LDL-C REDUCTION WITH EZETIMIBE IN KETOGENIC DIET-INDUCED HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA, which was recently accepted for publication in Lipids in Health and Disease.
I haven’t historically been a fan of group projects; if I feel like something’s important I generally just write a book, but publishing this paper was truly an enjoyable and worthwhile endeavor. I had the privilege of collaborating with brilliant people who truly care about optimizing patient care as we seek to usher in an era of individualized, precision medicine.
The term “Game Changer” is cavalierly tossed around far too frequently in academic circles, but I legitimately feel like this article will greatly impact lipid management for those who have experienced profound cholesterol excursions while on a ketogenic diet. It speaks to the importance of understanding the WHY behind hypercholesterolemia, as in this context, our framework, which describes the biochemical mechanisms leading to an induced hyperabsorptive state, suggests that ezetimibe, rather than statins or other medications, may be the preferred therapeutic intervention for those who need to move to a safer Lipid Neighborhood. In this cohort, we see LDL-C reductions of over 50% from baseline and absolute reductions of up to 257 mg/dL when using ezetimibe, which represents a stunning contrast to what is typically observed in the general population.
Elegant biochemistry, a sophisticated mechanistic framework, and potentially broad impact for patients…I highly recommend you add this to your “Must Read” list!
