As we approach another season of Recreational Youth Soccer, I’ve been reflecting on various options for Team Names. Typically, the league is rife with cliché labels such as “Destroyers” or “Shooting Stars,” although last season my daughter’s team was the “Flying Pancakes.” (Predictably, they were flattened by the Destroyers).
But I think we need to strongly consider the “Fighting Tardigrades” as a Team Name for the Fall Season. Although these “Water Bears” are small, they’re remarkably resilient! They are impervious to pressure. Intense heat and frigid temperatures don’t affect them. Deprive them of food, water, and even oxygen, and they will keep on ticking. Boil them, irradiate them, and launch them into Outer Space…they’ll probably be just fine!
And we can even yell, “Go Tards!” as a Team Cheer! On second thought, maybe we shouldn’t do that… additionally, tardigrades are plump, awkward, and move rather clumsily.
Hmm…maybe we’ll have to figure out a different marine arthropod as a mascot…or maybe we just stick to airborne Breakfast Foods. Regardless, I’m looking forward to the season!
