Most people think chameleons are pretty cool, and the ability to possess panoramic vision and change colors seems superficially awesome.  But when the going REALLY gets tough, chameleons are pretty helpless against predators.  They can’t really run from larger enemies and they are easily preyed upon by all sorts of nasty nematodes and opportunistic parasites.  There’s probably a reason why chameleons didn’t make the cut as Lizard Mascots for insurance plans!

In contrast, Dwarf Geckos display remarkable adaptability to adverse circumstances.  They can navigate rough terrain with nimble agility.  They are hardy and resilient, able to survive when food is scarce.  They even possess the ability to lose their tail…then regenerate it! They don’t blend in with their surroundings, but they make the most of their situations, demonstrating impressive resourcefulness and grit.

And I think there are some Lizard Lessons we can take away from these creatures.  So many people are Corporate Chameleons who change their narrative and simply take on the characteristics of their surroundings.  They might “seem cool,” but the moment things get difficult and their fraudulent cover is blown, they become easy prey for predators and parasites. 

In contrast, I want to be a Gecko of God.  Times will sometimes get tough, and I might even have to sacrifice my proverbial tail rather than compromise my beliefs.  But ultimately, I can be resolute and courageous, knowing that “in any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need” (Philippians 4:12).
